Scope of Joinery Works

The Japanese Apartment in Gozo is a serene and uniquely designed space, inspired by the principles of Japanese minimalism. Combining traditional aesthetics with bespoke furnishings, the apartment offers a tranquil and harmonious environment that immerses guests in a carefully curated sense of calm and balance. Every element of the interior was considered to enhance openness, simplicity, and connection with nature.

Having collaborated previously with Chris Briffa Architects, SAW approached the Japanese Apartment project as an opportunity to explore less conventional materials and techniques. The design incorporated solid oak with a raw-effect finish for furniture pieces, while sliding screens crafted from a type of plexiglass emulated the delicate texture of rice paper, reinforcing the minimalist aesthetic throughout the apartment.

One of the most striking features is the ‘floating’ bathroom, cladded in aged wood and suspended above a serene pond. This design element creates a visual focal point that exemplifies the harmony between architecture, furniture, and natural elements, while maintaining a sense of tranquility and elegance.

The project showcases SAW’s ability to deliver highly detailed, concept-driven interiors, combining technical precision, artistic vision, and functional design. Every element, from bespoke joinery to material selection, was executed to bring the Japanese-inspired aesthetic to life, creating a truly immersive experience for the apartment’s occupants.
